So, I haven't had time for reading fic or like, anything, in forever, and then I happened to watch some Teen Wolf (and then all the Teen Wolf), and then I became soooo obsessively fannish, and that resulted in me, uh, writing a fic.

Does anyone know where one would post a Teen Wolf fic? It is, unsurprisingly, Derek/Stiles. Also, is anyone else watching this? Recs?
I just logged into my lj/dreamwidth for the first time in forever, and I have 3 pages of unanswered comments. Yikes! To all the people who left me lovely comments, thank you. They were read and appreciated, but I'm cramming for a final and I shouldn't be online in the first place. I'm sorry I haven't responded to you personally, hopefully things will be less busy very soon! I miss all you wonderful flisters, but my schedule is so tight lately that I feel guilty whenever I think about browsing my flist.
I feel like I always sound quite angsty when I post, so please know that that's not the case! I'm doing quite well currently, new job, taking comp sci classes on the side. I'm extremely busy but also feeling good, and hoping to get back to some volunteer work as soon as my schedule settles into a bit of a routine.

That being said, lets talk WTF.

So, I don't know if I've ever mentioned this, but I'm a huge fan of this online game called LOTRO. That stands for Lord of the Rings Online. A lot of people play, and I happen to be an officer in a guild that was created as a safe-space for LGBTQ and allied gamers. That's pretty cool, right? A bunch of awesome gamers who are liberal and generally quite kind and helpful and understanding, great. Fabulous.

So, today my guild was reported for using a bad word in a recruit message posted on a regional chat channel. That's not great. We received a warning, and nobody knows what happens if you get a second strike, but the rumor is the guild might get banned. So, what was this horrible word we used in a public chat channel, you might ask. Well, it was "LGBT."

WTF.

No really, wtf.

Here's the recruit message, although I removed a few bits to make myself a little more anonymous:

"Are you a grown-up searching for adults in juvenile kins? Are you a new player and don't feel comfortable asking questions in un-friendly kins? Are you lgbt and don't feel comfortable being out in a homophobic kin? We are [A GUILD]; a place for maturity; a place to have fun with helpful, like-minded people and a place to be safely out. send tell for info etc"

The ticket we received in response said that we had violated the Code of Conduct because discussion of sexual identity is not allowed.

I had always wondered why there were so few guilds (we actually call them kinships but I suspect that's a bit more obscure) out there who stated that they were allies or lgbt friendly. Well, maybe there have been such groups but they've been banned for saying so. If the admins knew that the name of our guild is a queer reference, how long do you think we'd last?

Argh.

This probably doesn't even need to be said, but for a lot of people this game is a safe haven in a world of hostility. For some of the members of my guild, it's the only place where they can feel safe being completely open about their sexuality. People are afraid to submit complaints under their own names, lest they be banned from the game. That might sound like a silly thing to fear, but when you have come to associate your online identity with being free to be yourself in a way you can't be out in the real world, the idea of having that character erased from existence is not a particularly pleasant one.

p.s. If anyone plays LOTRO, and would like an LGBTQ and allied kinship, pm me :). I guess I can't say the name here, so it'll have to be our little secret.

comments

OTW Thoughts

It seems like everywhere I look lately, there are people talking about the upcoming OTW elections. I am a volunteer coder for the A03, and I have to say that the thought I keep coming back to about the whole situation is this:

I am so thankful for the OTW, and for the A03.

I read fic on the A03 every day. It has become my go-to destination for works in any and every fandom that I read. I really like the interface, the organization, and the knowledge that this place was created by amazingly dedicated and generous fans who care just as much as do I about making a space of our own. What amazes me most about this place, is that it is still in beta, and yet it is, for me, so superior to any number of websites, archives, etc. that are declared ready for public consumption. I think that because of the changes that do happen pretty regularly on the site, we sometimes forget that when we signed up for the Archive, we were told that the site is still in beta.

The other thing that never ceases to amaze me is that all the time and energy that goes into this and other OTW projects is done by volunteers. Not only are people not getting paid to do this, but people are working full-time jobs, caring for others, and dealing with all the stuff that we all do, and then putting in what should be another full day's work to help us get to use the archive. I am so thankful for that.

Finally, I can't speak to anyone's experiences but my own, but volunteering for the A03 has given me an amazing feeling of self-worth. Everyone I have worked with has been friendly, positive, and extremely willing to answer questions and help me become a better coder. I can't express how often someone has patiently stopped whatever they were doing to help me through a coding issue that I was having problems with. Also, I have consistently felt that members of this organization have accepted me exactly the way I am, with no need to feel ashamed of anything about myself. This organization has been exceptionally kind to me, and I am more grateful than I know how to express.

comments

Hey dudes!

I've just started my last semester of undergraduate study, which looks as though it's going to be a good one. Things aren't busy yet, but I can tell they're going to be soon and am already starting to sweat about that, despite the blizzard-like conditions. It's been nice to catch up with other people who are also up at night in a cold sweat about their futures. Somehow I thought I was the only person feeling neurotic about this, but I guess that was kind of self-centered. I just figured I was being crazy, but apparently a lot of people are feeling this way. Hooray for solidarity!

I haven't been on lj much, but I did write two Sherlock fics for the fic meme, which I'll de-anon and post at some point, probably when I'm avoiding the project of doom. One is a LOTR crossover in which I show just how much I've forgotten since reading the books about a million years ago.

Anyway, recs would be welcome, as usual. What have you been reading? I'm ridiculously far behind on my flist and have been obsessed with and reading nothing but Mighty Boosh/rpf/nathan barley/mint royale stuff. I'm itching to try my hand at some Boosh rpf, but I'm not certain whether or not it will actually happen.

ETA: LOOK AT THAT ICON!!! OH THE JOYS OF A FANDOM WHERE THAT PIC IS NOT MANIPPED EVEN A LITTLE. LOOK AT THE LUUURRRVVVEEE!!!!

How are you people doing? I want to hear about all your lives! Are you being drowned in snow or are you somewhere irritatingly warm? I was in California recently, for just long enough to be shocked when I had to dig my way through the snow up to my apartment door back home.

comments

Since I have so recently fallen in love with every possible thing about Jeeves & Wooster, it was awesome to get assigned a Jeevesian prompt for Yuletide! I wrote Pace the Meadows With a Heavy Tread PG, 7300 words.

"Bertie has a rather rummy realization, but there's hardly time to consider it, what with all the dratted relations who've decided to invade the old Wooster homestead, not to mention Honoria Glossop. Only Jeeves could possibly save this day."

This was totally fun, and gave me an excuse to rewatch the episodes. I've been listening to Wodehouse books on tape, too, so credit for any particularly good lines really ought to go to Wodehouse himself.

I also got extremely lucky and received two totally delightful Jeeves & Wooster fics as gifts.

id_ten_it wrote Trying Circumstances, a charming Wodehousian tale involving Claude and Eustace (Always a treat), Bertie receiving cooking lessons, Auntly cameos, and Jeeves saving the day as always. Thank you so much, bb!

pepperlandgirl4 wrote me a fabulous Yuletide Madness treat (And BTW, 10k in one day and it is so so well-written!). Avalon Manor is a Merlin/Jeeves & Wooster crossover, and every moment of it is a delight. All the voices were wonderfully in character, and it was just such a lovely surprise! Thank you so much too, bb!

( I'll put my resolutions under a cut so I can ramble a bit )

comments

Hey dudes!

Things have been crazy! I haven't really been around for the past few months, which sucks because I've not gotten to talk to any of you lovely people for far too long. In my absence, I did watch the entirety of Jeeves and Wooster and Black Adder and also all of the Eccleston/Tennant eps of Dr. Who. Anyway, I've neglected a few of you and I'm very sorry for that! Things got insane but the grad school application process is going about as well as it can at the moment and my thesis is coming along nicely, too.

I haven't been writing much lately. I want to, but I've been experiencing a lot of writer's block. Except maybe it's more like no time to write and guilt that I should be doing academic things instead. I don't know, but I am starting to have some story ideas again so maybe that will soon pass. I feel really guilty because I had to drop out of Merlin hols, but I'm hoping to maybe finish my story at some point and offer it to the person with whom I was matched up. I feel terrible about receiving a story that I haven't earned, but at the same time I'm really excited to see all the fic that the fest generates.

On a happier note, this is a second call for people who would like to receive a holiday card from me some time this month. Those of you who expressed interest, I'll pm you in a few minutes and we can trade addresses. For people who didn't respond to my last post on the subject but would like a card, I am feeling very creative right now and would love to make a card for anyone who is reading this, whether we know each other well or not! I have big plans and would love to make you something, so please don't hesitate if you would like to receive one! I love cards too, so let me know if you'd like a trade.

Finally, since I've been mostly away I haven't read anything in ages. Rec me things! I'm caught up on Merlin, so that's fine. Merlin/Gwaine or Arthur/Merlin/Gwaine recs, anyone? Other Arthur/Merlin fic? Alternately, do you have any favorite Dr. Who or Jeeves fic or something? Anything interesting happening with y'all?

Much love to all of you!

comments

Hey people!

I'm kinda somewhat less stressed, so lets talk about fun stuff:

1. winter holiday cards: I have to do this incredibly early or it won't happen at all. so, are any of you delightful people interested in exchanging holiday cards/chocolate/blah blah cool stuff from your locality? I certainly am! If this sounds cool to you, let me know and we'll pm mailing addresses some time before the end of the year.

2. RECIPES. Guys I need recipes! My list of untried recipes is running low, so I'm looking for your fave recipes, sites, blogs, etc. I really like smitten kitchen, but I've tried most of the things on there that interested me already. I eat most stuff, but I have a vegan roommate so It'd be awesome to have some vegetarian options and things for which dairy and egg can easily be omitted.

3. I'm working on your fic requests, oh all people have made them! I swear! How are all your lives going?

oh p.s. Having a period of intense Fry/Laurie obsession. Have spent the weekend mainlining Jeeves and Wooster and I am OBSESSED. OMG. OBSESSED. Rec me things, please! Stephen Fry is so fantastic! Anyway last night I read a fic called "What Ho, Daleks?" LOVEEEEEEEEEEE.

comments

Guys, I feel like this is my fault for never feeling angsty about school before. Yeah, midterms and finals get rough, but I've never had any major issues with college. I did an early admission plan for my first choice school, so I knew I was accepted before having to turn in any other applications. It was fabulous.

Except now I need to go to grad school. OMG GUYS, THIS IS SO FUCKING HARD. I have a list of schools that's like 23843209 pages long, I'm trying not to break the bank on application fees, and all of a sudden I need to know what I'm gonna write a dissertation on? Um, NO. I have to write an 80-100 page thesis for my BA, and that is ENOUGH FOR NOW, THANK YOU.

Plus, ugh, GRE, your powerprep software appears to be from like 1995 and crashes my computer with its old lameness every time I try to take a goddamn practice test. I have to get like a thousand letters of recommendation, and I'm in the midst of a huge packet for a scarily prestigious fellowship, my computer needs to be repaired (broken hinge, video cable is in and out) and apparently I'm supposed to also graduate from college, find a job, and pay my insane loans? AAAAHHH.

On a brighter note, the fellowship I'm applying for is very competitive, but I apparently have a very good shot at getting it. If so, I'm going to be traveling for a year in the UK and France. Hopefully I will get to meet lots of you, flisters! I would love that! Also, does anyone know of any sites that are associated with Arthurian legend that are located somewhere other than the UK or France? I should probably just look this up myself, but my computer is seriously about to swoon.

( Oh right, also.
Dudes, life is pretty great right now. My big bang's currently in beta, I've got kinkme_merlin and Sherlock prompts a plenty, and I'm hanging out with nuclearsugars soon! I got some work on my quarter sleeve/big arm tat in early July, and I'm getting it finished next week, which for me is very exciting because I've been getting work on this piece since last summer.

But must return to SHERLOCK. OM FUCKING G. SHERLOOOOOCKKKKK. Okay yes, I saw those douchey interviews with Moffat and company (and wtf, Moffat, you wound me) but I am not convinced. When I'm trying to figure out whether or not a scene is really gay as hell, I try to envision one of the characters as a woman and say, is this was a guy and a girl, would it be read as sexual tension? And, um, Sherlock honey, your gay is showing. MOAR PLZ. I just saw the second one, and the gay continues. Amazing. I'm having tons of fic ideas already, in fact I've already started writing one.

Speaking of Moffat, while I was glaring at my big bang and trying to will it to finish itself, I mainlined the entirety of the most recent season of Dr. Who, which, by the way, I didn't know I was missing but now I don't know how I lived without! Dudes, I dress just like Eleven. It's uncanny, really. I swear I own the exact same boots he has, and I THINK BOWTIES ARE COOL TOO.

To complete my mostly old news tv watching, I just started watching the American Queer as Folk. And then, because I'm a shitty gay and fall prey to stereotyping, I googled Gale Harold to find out if he was a freal gay, and got the awesomest response:

"The actor Gale Harold who plays Brian Kinney on the U.S. version of the popular gay drama series is not a real life homosexual."

Is it just me or is that totally hilarious wording? What, like opposed to fantasy life? BTW, wikianswers, I do not believe in your shitty gender/sexuality binary, so suck on that. Ugh, how can the word homosexual sound so ridiculous, when the word homo is one of the words I most frequently use to describe myself?!

Okay really going to sleep now, but what's up, people? Rec me stuff, please. Squeeing over Sherlock? Seeing the light at the end of the big bang tunnel? Have awesome pictures of dogs or Castiel or some shit? SHARE.

comments

It feels great to be done with my big J2 fic, as well as my reel_merlin fic, but now I'm starting to work more seriously on my big bang, so HAH. Busy is better than boring.

comments

All references to Supernatural belong to Kripke and co, and none of it belongs to me.
Prompt: “2466. RPF - Supernatural, Jensen Ackles & Jared Padaleki, Considering they’ve had a good laugh about people’s perceptions in the past and how close a friendship they have, Jensen was sure that Jared would be understanding when he came out, that was why he chose him to be the first one he told. (Could go either way – unexpected homo/biphobia or the expected support possibly even more)”
Summary: Jensen has always been attracted to guys, but it takes Jared getting married to make him start to accept who he is. The only question is, will Jared accept it? Featuring angst, first time gay bar experiences, revelations (although not the biblical sort), marriages gained and lost, and a lot of baked goods.
Warnings: explicit sex, references to homophobia
Author's Notes: Thank you to my amazing beta, erda, who talked me through every step of this story, and gave incredibly helpful feedback!
Hello everyone!

I've been sadly absent for a few weeks, thanks to finals and then trying frantically to finish my reel merlin draft. I sent that in a few hours ago, now I have some time to edit, add scenes, etc. I also have an LGBT fest story in the works, which is a J2. I'm very excited about that, although time is definitely tight!

Anyway, thank you so much to the people who purchased me paid DW time. I can't see who you are, but I'm certain you're awesome! Thank you! Also thank you for the DW points! It took me ages to get this post up, which is awful, so i'm sorry it's so belated!

Also Ras, you are such a sweetheart, thank you and I hope to see you again soon (again, so painfully belated).

So how's stuff for you guys, flist/reading list? Anyone else going crazy with challenges, etc? I signed up for Merlin big bang, too, so I hope lots of other people did as well so we can all freak out together!

I'm so psyched for remix tomorrow, hope you guys are too! I can't wait to see which of my fic was remixed, and to read the influx of awesome fic!

Okay, sporadic post is sporadic, but as soon as these big fests are done with (LGBT fest June 1st, Reel Merlin June 7th) I'll be able to relax, do kink meme fills, not be flaky about gifts, rant about Spn, etc.

comments
